VV-XVI Speed Adjustment

Hi Everyone,
I'll preface this with I'm sure this is a really dumb noob question, but I cannot seem to find the answer. Also, I apologize in advance if my terms are completely incorrect. I take corrective criticism very well, so please correct me as needed.

Here goes.

On my XVI, I'm having trouble with the speed adjustment.

First off, pic 1 is my 3 spring motor for reference

Pic 2 shows where I am having trouble.

It seems that for me to get the proper speed, I have to have the adjustment screw screwed all the way down and even then, it is not pushing the rod far enough down so that the platter will get up to 78rpm. I've been looking for images showing this area because I'm not sure if I am missing a part or if something broke between the adjustment screw or the rod the screw is supposed to push on. Having said that, if I place something between the screw and rod (paper towel or tape), it gets up to speed and plays great.

Any ideas on what this could be?

It doesn't appear that there is. Of course, I might not know what I am looking at.

I had a similar problem and discovered that not all the Victor speed adjusting screws are the same length. Someone had replaced mine with a shorter adjusting screw from a Victrola IV. You might find that your adjusting screw is just the wrong one.

To get more speed the friction pad needs to be moved farther away from the governor plate. You can adjust this by seeing how the pads are attached to the speed control rod and moving it. You can also adjust the governor bearings to slightly move the governor away from the pads. Only adjust the gov bearings after the motor is wound down.

If you can't regulate the speed properly with the speed control knob, follow the little rod that makes contact with the underside of the speed control knob. Follow that thin rod towards the motor. You'll find a little joint where the rod can be adjusted. Back the speed control know so it moves up which will give you room to make an adjustment. Now loosen the joint and while holding the end closest to the governor, you can adjust the other end of the rod. You may have to play with it for a bit, but this is the best way to adjust the speed. I have moved the governor on the shaft but only as a last resort. When you move the governor on its shaft you are making changes in the efficiency of the motor.
