I think you can go too far with political correctness.Back then,that was the common thing.As for "I Didn't Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier",that was written in 1915,when America was still isolationist during WWI.After the ship the Lusitania was sunk by a German U Boat the song"When The Lusitania Went Down"was published.Because American lives were lost,that caused us to get involved in the war.edisonplayer

Just for the "record", here's a little story about
what I did, along these lines:

One time a few summers ago, I brought my own Blue Amberol cylinders and my own properly working model H reproducer
to the Atlanta, Illinois public library where they
have a nicely restored Edison model D combination 2-4
machine with signet horn in the parlor.

It was on a day when there were several library patrons
relaxing in chairs in that parlor.

I commenced to put on about a 40 minute demonstration
playing some of my best Blue Amberols for them.

One of my all-time favorites, a selection entitled
"Darky School Days" was played for them.

As it played I could sense their dismay at the content.
I played it all the way through and handed them the
box to pass around amongst themselves.

At the end, I explained to them that it is not me
who's responsible for this content. I told them it
is the gentleman pictured on the container, one
Thomas A. Edison. I told them that Edison
was known for his baudy and very wry sense of humor.

This is why we have a perfect copy of a record
which starts out with the words "Heya there Coon,
what choo doin"?.....

Offensive? Oh please....

I have really about had it with all of this
forced political correctness. Enough already.
I have rights too, and my right is to say what I feel
because I too have my opinions about things and they
shall not be suppressed. They are equally as valid
as any other opinions.

And yes, I do really get a kick out of listening
to and sharing Coon Cylinders and Diamond Discs.

Good post, Chuck. I couldn't explain it any better. As I said in my previous post, I don't endorse the content. But I do listen to them. When I play these, I put myself into perspective of what the culture was 100 plus years ago. To be honest, some of these are pretty darn funny.

My daughter who is of mixed race (African American,English, Irish, Scottish,French,Italian,German, and Cherokee), She had me repeat Alexanders Ragtime Band, On Edison Blue Amberol over and over, and it has a few questionable lines. In case you might think I am racist I am certainly not. I will teach her A very broad view of American History, from all perspectives. She is now going to be 8 in March, and has A's and B's in school.
