The spring steel piece that is broken off is what controls your speed 160 rpm for a two or four minute cylinder the curved piece above is the brake. The pully on the string guard is for tension on the string that should be crossed or the cylinder will turn backwards and you may hear demonic messages :twisted: If you need an original spring steal speed control I have one PM me.

Thanks for the information, I bent the curved piece as pictured & it works great as a stop/stop switch. The string I'm using stretches after a few plays & the cylinder does not play correctly. Is their a special type of string to use?

I use embroidery thread as long as it is thin enough to stay in the groves of the mandrel and there can't be any stretch in the string. If the string slips it can be coated with bees wax before installation
