Why'd you delete your post George? I found it to be sound advise that could have helped others searching the forum in the future?

As for the turntable, I liked George's solution but if the Aluminum from the can is too thick, you could use the aluminum tape that is used for sealing HVAC ducting. It's sticking on one side, can be easily cut to shape, and is removable in the future should you want to go the machine shop route.

There is no substitute for quality. Ask yourself how many times have you been on the receiving end of a crappy repair? How did you feel when you discovered it?

I also agree that there is no substitute for quality, but also you never want to do anything that can never be undone. If something can be adjusted without impact to the original parts, then that should be preferred. If there is nothing else that can be done to save an original part, then the minimum should be done. In this case if the spindle hole can not be corrected by simple means then a bushing should de inserted and pinned in place.

What we all hate and what you are referring are those hacks that are done just to push it out for money. Those are unacceptable. I don't believe that any of those ideas presented here were in that category.

That said if the original poster would like to have a bushing inserted I would be happy to run it through my shop.

The part(Turntable) you have is already screwed up so inserting a bushing will not affect any value to the machine except increase it since it will no longer be screwed up. A new bushing can be inserted and by the time the felt is installed the repair would be virtually unobtrusive. The way the repair is done is to mount the turntable in the chuck of a lathe large enough to do the job. You can also mount the turntable on a face plate and indicate the outside so when you re-bore the hole slightly larger it is concentric to the outside diameter. A thin steel bushing(which would be made to order for this repair)with a half thou larger diameter than the hole you bore can then be press fit into the turntable. No pin would be required as stated by Mr. Maginter. Pin? Why would you use a pin in this repair? A press fit is more than adequate. Now if the bushing is made long you will have to re-mill the cross slot for the turntable shaft pin. A bushing can be made shorter so that operation doesn't need to be done. It will work fine but I prefer the full length bushing and then re-mill the cross slot. It is not advisable to do this on a drill press as it is very difficult to get the hole you are boring for the bushing concentric with the outside diameter of the turntable.
Sorry George if I insulted your advise to Jerry but when I read it, it was like the blind leading the blind which I see so often on this forum so I felt I had to chime in on this one. Phonographs are precision mechanical devices and should be treated as such.

Wow really? Pinning the bushing insurers it will not move or shift on the part. But I guess you're the expert and my 35 years in tool and die and Engineering are pretty much useless. So yes I am a little touchy when it comes to people making claims that are untrue. I'm through with you and this conversation.

A good press fit properly done is solid as a rock and will never move. As a "Tool and Die" guy, you should know this. How in the world are you going to pin this repair??? This repair does not lend itself easily to putting in a pin. Not advisable.

Like I said before, if done correctly no pins are necessary. Tell me, how you are going to install pins? The only way its feasible is vertically if the bushing is thick enough. Still unnecessary. But again I ask how would this help. You're not towing a Mack truck with this turntable. From the sound of Jerry's original post, the turntable did not have much of a larger hole. Somebody probably filed it out because of rust. I've seen this a lot. A thin bushing is indicated here. Carefully done and made to press fit, the repair is not only sound but not very obvious. Problem solved. Proper tools are required to do the job right. Pins vertically or horizontally are not going to help. Trying to install them for "Safe Measure" not only complicates things but accomplishes nothing worthwhile in the end. Another note is that you don't want to make the bushing any larger than absolutely necessary because you will undermine the integrity of the boss underneath with too thick a bushing increasing the possibility of cracking it when press fitting the bushing.

Let's all slow down and take a deep breath here. I asked for suggestions and all were given with the best intent. The suggestion to take it to a professional also had good intent. People get insulted because posts are only written word. You don't see the smile or hear the voice inflection when an adjective is used.
