Original Amberola 50 Grill clothe?

Post by MidMich »

Here is a picture of the grill and cloth form my Amberola 50. The seller told me that it had been in their family since new and I have no reason to doubt them. It is all original down to the hardened drops of black grease on the bottom. The cloth does not look like any the I have seen for sale as replacements. It is very old and frail with a couple of tears in it. I think if I rubbed it to much that it would crumble. As you can see it is made with fine thread and has a pattern to it, parts of the pattern have sections with a screen like pattern, like a screen door where air could pass. Is this original?

I should add that it is a later Model 50, gold ID tag right side of lid, # SM 39412

No, it's a home made replacement. Originals are solid colored silk and pretty much all of them have disintegrated over time.

It's old, but not original. Relatively few Edisons retain their original grille cloth.

Interesting, This is very old and looks like it could have been silk. Some one must have installed it many decades ago. I am not sure what the original cover color would have been. But this looks like it goes with the player and it has been on it for decades, so I think I will leave it alone.
