Herzog cabinet / Columbia grafonola

Post by Omanwill »

Hello everybody,

I'm new to the group, and I think I'm posting this in the correct place, but please forgive me if I'm not.

I'm attaching a couple of pictures of two items I inherited, and hoping that somebody will be able to assist. I know the Columbia unit is probably fairly common, but I'd welcome any information on it.

The second piece, I believe to be a Herzog cabinet. (I'm unsure if it's for sheet music or records.). I've spent some time online looking for an identical unit, with no luck.

Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of history for either, but I believe they've been in my family for 75-100 years. Both have sat in my mother's basement for the last 40 +, and now reside in my dining room.

While they are probably interesting pieces, I don't really have an appreciation for either. Am open to ideas on restoration or selling. Any info/value/history...would be much appreciated.

Oman: Welcome from all of us, I'm sure.
The Columbia is a frequently found model but less so in oak. It's a beauty.
The record cabinet is quite a desirable one. More knowledgeable members will pinpoint make and model but looks to me like a Victor IV would perch handsomely atop of it. This board has a for sale/wanted section that is very active should you wish to part with these. You might ask for suggestions on pricing via the board's personal messaging feature.

Yes, welcome.

Where are you located? Location can sometimes be a deal maker or breaker in certain cases. That said, the record cabinet is a real beauty, my Victor IV would look great on it!

Yes this is the matching Herzog record cabinet for the Victor IV.
Both items look to be in good condition. Personally I would not be doing any restoration on them.

Hi,

The Grafonola upright looks like a "Leader", circa 1915. While it was a common model, most examples found are usually dark mahogany.

Yours, in Golden Oak, is less common, and looks to be in very nice condition.

With the workings cleaned and lubricated, it is a nice player.

I was about to ask the same question! I'd be interested if it were within five hours of Washington, D.C. by car. ;)

Since there appears to be a lot of interest in these, I'm going to post some additional pictures.

Also, does anybody have thoughts on value(s), as I'd be open to parting with one, or both.

Thanks!

Like others I'm also interested in the cabinet. I'm 45 minutes away.
Keep me in mind if you decide to sell it and your price.
Direct email is best

My brother lives in Pontiac, and I would love to have a cabinet to complete my IV assemblage. I'll send an email.
