FOR SALE: Edison Long Play discs, reproducer & gearing $1400

Post by pughphonos »

To raise funds for another project, I've decided to let go of my eight Edison Long Play discs (see list below), plus my Long Play reproducer (in great shape with original stylus) and the gearing kit required to enable a Diamond Disc phonograph to play these records.

The discs are in a variety of conditions. I have posted all to You Tube and you can see yourself as to their condition. Many have skips/hang-ups if played with original equipment, but most play through if played with a modern turntable.

All sides of all discs are featured in videos I posted to You Tube around a year ago. Here's the link to my channel, "Phonos4all":

It's been a pleasure having the Edison LP system, but a month shy of my 60th birthday it's time to let it go and concentrate on other things.

Given what I paid for the various discs and the hardware, I feel $1400 is a reasonable offer.

Ralph

Ralph, I'm saddened to hear you're letting go of your L-P setup, and records.

Knowing you as I do, I'm sure this is a bittersweet and difficult decision for you.

This lot will make someone quite happy, I'm sure, and all-in-all, I think your asking price is more than fair.

Best of luck with the sale, my friend.

Fran, thank you for your kind words and endorsement. Though I do have an immediate need I'm seeking to address by this sale, it's also a strategic downsizing. It's precisely because I have concentrated on and enjoyed the LP experience--and transferred the sides to video--that I'm comfortable letting this part of my collection go. My commitment to Edison otherwise remains intact: my standard Diamond Disc collection now stands at around 920 discs and of course I'll treasure my Schubert for the rest of my days.

I also find that I'm using my Rek-O-Cut system much more than initially (when I bought it in 2010) and I'm now belatedly moving towards vertical cuts. I've still got a reproducing baby grand piano to pay off. I'm also a semi-professional musician and am trying to bring into closer union the music I listen to with the music I play.

Thanks, again, for the endorsement. I'm indeed hoping that someone who is interested in the LP system and "going from zero to 60" will grab this up. The reproducer has a pretty decent finish (no pitting) and the stylus is good. I put a new diaphragm in it a couple years ago.

I have access to two Rek-O-Kut turntables in portable casses, and have wondered if they are worth playing with...

Hi Frank,

I have a CVS-14 and I'm totally happy with it. It plays vertical and lateral cuts; has speed adjustments; and the styli I picked up for it fit the grooves well. In many cases you can hardly tell that any given 1920s disc has been totally beaten up by overplay with steel needles. I have it attached to a Marantz sound system--and through that to four speakers located throughout my living room.

FYI, I removed the original turntable from my parents' (and now my) 1967 Zenith console radio/phonograph and put the CVS-14 inside instead (I had to have a furniture restorer do some work to expand the space for the CVS-14--and it now fits). The original turntable was one of those cheap drives with a "dummy wheel" and with age was not spinning at a constant speed. But being a baby boomer, I still wanted to have the beautiful mid-1960s cabinet.
