Interesting, I know Edison used a lot of currently odd sizes, like the 5 40, But I was surprised that when I was looking at some replacement wood screw for the hinges on the lid. I did locate some new hinges, also an odd size 2" x 1 3/16" flat butt hinges. But the wood screws were odd. Bigger then a #4 and smaller then a #6. I got out a old reference book on hardware and measured them. .125". They were also a #5 or also known as a 5 gauge . Full name is a #5 slotted counter sunk oval head wood screw. The major diameter on a #5 is ⅛", so maybe back then they were sticking to ⅛" increments.

I was able to locate some #5 x ½" counter sunk slotted round head screws in stainless. Most I could find were in brass and good luck fining any in non plated steel. The stainless is a very close color match for the factory nickel plated ones. The original ones have a non threaded shank area just under the head, the SS one are threaded up to the head. I tried to screw one of the SS ones in hinge screw hole and it started to get tight about ¾ of the way in. Putting on two pair of glass and looking at the old and new screws side by side, I found the problem . The old screws are more tapered then the new ones. So the new ones wedge in faster.
I can see where with a hobby like this, you will build up a big supply of "spare" parts. I may just try to replate the old ones.
