Oak or Mahogany cygnet horn

Post by tomb »

I will be ordering a cygnet wood horn from Eduardo in Peru at the end of this month. I understand the quality of his horns is very good. All my Edison's are oak. The mahogany horn looks nice but does it go with the oak standards and homes??? Do I need to only use an oak horn on the machines.??? His price is $ 775.00 plus $ 75.00 shipping for the horn only. Would I be better off going on the forum and buying one there??? so many Edison's ....So many options. So little time...:?: Tom B

Just my two cents: I'd not do mahogany with oak. I can't recall seeing a Home or Standard with a wooden horn. That level would begin with Triumphs IMO. A metal wood-grain painted horn would seem more suitable for the Homes and Standards, again IMO.
Eduardo's horns look very nice, and I haven't heard any bad reports about them, or any difficulty with shipping.
Good luck with your choices!

I would echo what barnettrp21122 has said. I would also say that if you buy a horn from Eduardo, you will not be disappointed! I would highly recommend Eduardo anytime. Steve

If your machines are oak, you really should get an oak horn. I see mixed woods sometimes on machines being auctioned and it kind of hurts to even look at them.

In August of 1910 Edison started offering both oak and mahogany Music Master horns. They could be ordered on Standard' and Home machines starting with Model-C and all models after that. They could be ordered with oak case and oak horn or mahogany case and mahogany horn.

Thanks Rich, I can see how that would evolve back in the day. Who'd have thought the horns would end up being more valuable today than the machines they were originally paired with! ;)

I went back as I should have done earlier and in the Flows it lists the mahogany horn/phonograph and oak horn/phonograph along with a spruce one avaible. Since this is going on a standard F which is oak I will go with the oak but that mahogany one sure looks good.

Bob, if you think the price of an oak and mahogany Music Master horns are high try finding a Spruce Music Master horn... big bucks.

Rich, you're right! Spruce horns always attract attention when they show up at shows or auctions. Unless I win the lottery it will be a long time before I enter that level of collecting! :)
