Ready Made 78 Shelves?

Post by Chinacat »

I wasn't sure which forum to ask this in. Does anyone know of a ready made shelf that is hearty enough to store 78's? Much thanks for your help. Right now I store them in a filing cabinet, not the best method!

Have you tried IKEA? I have several of their "Billy" bookshelves loaded with 78s. It helps greatly if you buy extra shelves and cut them to make vertical spacer/supports every foot or so; 78s are heavy, as you know, and the flakeboard veneer shelves will bend under the load unless they are reinforced in this way. The Billy shelves are not deep enough to accommodate the full dimension of either 10" or 12" albums; 10" albums stick out over the front edge by about 1", 12" albums about 2"-3". This actually makes it easier to remove them from the shelves. IKEA may offer other shelves with more depth, but I haven't looked into it recently.

Much thanks, Henry. I'll poke around on Ikea's site. John

I bought wood shelving units at Office Depot. They had some attractive ones at decent prices. Then I had a carpenter make dividers along the lines of the ones Henry describes. The dividers gave the necessary support and also pretty much eliminate the risk of a record falling over with a bang and breaking. I keep Diamond Discs on the top shelf were there are no dividers, as they weren't needed for support and Diamond Discs are far less fragile.

We've had a few discussions on record storage so search the board for more ideas.

I deliberately don't have a lot of records, so for now I use a 6-cube unit I got at Target a while back. You can see it in my post on this page:

Thank you, Clay. That's a beautiful storage set-up you have.

I've used these for years. They are stackable, too, although I'd hesitate to do this with heavy 78s:

I wouldn't fill one of those spindly units up with shellac and start stacking them. No way, Jose. Maybe if the back was braced with a solid board...

Could I use these shelves in my 2 storerooms? They'd make my records much easier to find.edisonplayer
