Edison Standard With 8 Panel Brass Horn

Post by Phonofreak »

I saw this Edison Standard on ebay with a Canadian dealer tag on front. The part that I am puzzled with is the horn. It looks like a Fireside or a Gem horn in brass. Is this original or a repro? If it is a repro, I never saw it in brass before. Any thoughts? Also, the seller says it's a 10 panel horn, but I only count 8.

I wonder if it's a reproduction horn that has been plated. I would want to see if a magnet sticks. Jerry

If you check out the seller's other items (pictures below), they have a few phonographs with rather unique (uncommon?) horns.
I've never seen a brass paneled horn like that, I don't think it's a Canadian specific thing.
The dealer tag is very common in these parts, every Edison I've owned has had it (including my Opera), and three of the sellers machine's have it - the fourth one probably lost it at some point  .

Unfortunately Belmont is about 3 hours one way for me, and the prices of these machines are definitely not worth the trip.

I would wager one American dollar that the horn is painted gold.

Vince, If you had a family, driving the 3 hours would make a great outing. Bring a picnic lunch and have a good, old time.  Seriously, I think it is a repro Fireside horn painted gold. The crane tops and bottom appear to be repros. The crane itself looks like a bent piece of rod. The rest of the machines look hokey and are pretty expensive.

May be painted gold, can't tell from the photos, but it it is possible that the horn in question really might be be brass. The fellow who first began making good reproductions of the Gem/Fireside horns (after the simply awful parodies offered in the 1970's by the infamous Karl Frick) sold them in brass at a slight advance in price. Much like the brass 19" Victor petal horns which were available until quite recently. I understand that very well made brass versions of several Edison horns are also available from a Turkish seller, though not many of those parts have made it to our hemisphere just yet.
