Here's a very nice and original Victor 1 gramophone upgraded with correct period Victor Improved Concert soundbox and dealer adapter for larger horn. This machine has been serviced with a replacement mainspring and the speed governor has been overhauled with new tension springs. The rare Victor Dealer option "Victor Improved Concert" soundbox has been rebuilt and detailed to provide stunning volume and clarity for such a small machine, and the correct original Victor Dealer horn elbow adapter allows the installation of a larger horn than original. (Both upgrades would have been available at time of purchase through your Victor Dealer at additional cost.)
The serial number on this machine is 24724, which puts it at about ¼ way into the production run of approximately 90,000 units between start of production in 1905 and end in 1920. In about 1910, the "early" small case model was replaced with a larger case and 10" turntable, so that puts the date of production on this machine likely in the 1908-10 period as a best educated guess.
The single spring motor runs strong and with minimal side noise. Playing speed does not waver. It will power smoothly and effortlessly through a 10" record with no thumps, bumps, bangs, or other indications of trouble as seen in the attached video. (The Victor 1 was never intended for playing 12" discs as far as I'm aware.)
The cabinet and nickel plating is all original. Since this is a pleasing example, it was decided to leave it "as found" rather than "improving" on it with anything more than a normal cleaning and polish.
As can be seen in the photos, there is wear to the nickel plating but it's not objectionable. The pictures make the plating actually appear somewhat worse than it really is, in my opinion. The wooden case is in good condition with no other issues besides some barely noticeable "alligatoring" in spots on the motor board. The back bracket filligree is still very nice, and the original paint/ decal horn has "just enough" patina.
This machine was meant to play acoustically recorded records as demonstrated. While it will adequately play post 1925 electrical 78s, to achieve maximum clarity and minimum record wear a second reproducer, a rebuilt and detailed HMV (Victrola) #4 is available to be ordered at extra cost of $150 to go with the machine.
There are NO reproduction parts on this machine. Even the turntable felt is original!
Watch the video to see and hear it play "There Ain't No Land Like Dixieland To Me" by Sam Lanin's "Broadway Bell Hops" featuring Frank Trumbauer, Bix Beiderbecke, Joe Venuti, and vocalist Irving Kaufman. Sorry, the recording is for demonstration purposes only and is NOT included.
I'll include ground shipping by parcel post in two boxes at the advertised price in the continental USA. Other locations, please inquire.
