Need some information about this Columbia AY...

Post by ticticdok »

I ran across this Columbia AY today and was just wanting to know a little more information about it. Its all complete, plays great and a nice clean machine. It is a front mount machine with a brass horn as you can see. Just curious about more information about it, rarity and maybe about a fair market value. Thanks for any help you can give. John

According to Baumbach & Lackey, the AY was introduced in 1904 at a price of $50.00. It was similar to the AR, but with a smaller motor and turntable.

The first edition of the Compendium gives an estimate of about $2,200 for an AY in pristine or perfectly restored condition: but bear in mind that valuation was made 20 years ago. The market will fluctuate, depending on any number of variables. Ask the seller what they want for it; determine whether parts are all original, and if not, how many reproduction parts; ask whether the finish is original, etc. , and make your offer based on that.
