Well, I finally upgraded to a double spring motor. Not only because this is my 50st post, but also because I bought a HMV 130. I bought it on Ebay from a seller I know and trust, and I can't wait until I get it!

Bart—That looks like a nice machine (and congratulations on your 50th post). From the pictures and video, it looks and sounds great.bart1927 wrote:Well, I finally upgraded to a double spring motor. Shane—do you own one of this model?
For posterity (and for anyone who cannot read German or Dutch), here is the original text and a horrible machine translation of that eBay listing. I would take it out of all caps, but I do not know how to properly capitalize German.
Feel free to mock my attempts at cleaning that up, they’re terrible. But hopefully you can get the gist of it.

Re: HMV 130
David,
I don't own one, but the 130 has been on my want list for a while. They've got a decent sized horn combined with the 5b soundbox, so they sound really good for a table model. It should hold it own with the smaller Victor ortho uprights & consoles.

Re: HMV 130
Congratulations Bart. Thats a nice machine. I note that the original selling price for this oak machine was £10 10 shillings! If only they cost that today!

Re: HMV 130
Curiously the escutcheon appears to be either a replacement one OR the inner piece has disintegrated through heavy use and been lost? This should also have an oxidised brass plating but it appears to be nickel? There is definitely something not quite "right" about it anyway.
I wouldn't comment on the grille cloth as the photo makes it look very dark with a heavy weave. Is it original?
The 130 should only ever have a 5a soundbox on it, coming as it did after the No. 5 and well out of stock before the advent of the 5b.

Re: HMV 130
Hi Steve, according to the Ebay description the gramophone is completely original. It has a 5A soundbox. I`m not an expert on talking machines, but this man also has a physical shop in the Netherlands, and I bought my first gramophone (a portable Columbia 109a) from him. He is well known among Dutch collectors, so I assume he can be trusted completely.Steve wrote:Curiously the escutcheon appears to be either a replacement one OR the inner piece has disintegrated through heavy use and been lost? English is not my mother tongue, and I´m not always familiar with the "gramophone" terms used on this board. What exactly is an escutcheon? And what part of the gramophone should have an oxidised brass plating? Tonearm? Needle cup? Soundbox? Maybe you could provide me with some pictures so I can see what a completely original HMV 130 should look like. Thanks in advance for your trouble.

While I am sure that everyone knows that I am no expert, I can at least help you with part of the terminology.
Here is an escutcheon (although not, I am sure, from this machine):
And ‘gramophone’ is another (primarily British?) word for phonograph.
Hope this helps.
