Safe to assume this is a crapophone?

Post by TonyJ »

Reproducer is obviously wrong, platter and other parts look painted and appears there is a gap in the connection to the horn. Is this whole machine just another crapophone?

Hello,
That is a real Victor V. It just has the wrong reproducer. It is worth at least $1000 and probably more.

The horn looks authentic, but the gap where the connection should be will prevent much sound emerging from it.

Having a second look I think the lower portion of the tone arm is not correct for this machine. However the horn looks nice and has a decent decal and the cabinet is in good condition. It will cost you perhaps $200 for the correct tone arm and reproducer.

It might simply be missing the spring in the pin under the tone arm. Definitely wrong reproducer. Should be an exhibition-not hard to find. For that price, I'd grab it immediately before someone else does. With the exhibition in place, pass the extended tone arm/reproducer over the spindle. If the needle would touch the spindle, or almost, it is the right tone arm.

Good Luck,

Matt

That's an E. Toman reproducer. It's an orthophonic-type reproducer that fits onto pre-orthophonic machines so they can play electrics. They're ceramic and quite heavy but they work well.

Just called about it and the guy said it is sold. It needed some help. It just freewheels when cranked, wrong reproducer and you can see that the turntable, back bracket, horn support clip, crank handle and maybe more have all been painted black. Still a good buy for someone.

Just saw the same machine on eBay and bid is currently at over $700. Seller is in Holly also, I'm guessing someone must have told him the price he was asking on Craigslist was too low?
