Edison B with a speed adjust?

This is an odd one.... Has anyone seen an Edison standard B with a speed knob? I recently picked up what looks to be a B, everything looks to be a B (crank is threaded, decal, etc). But it has a speed adjustment. I have never seen a B 2 minute with this. The plate starts with a "S". Compared to my other B's its spot on, but just has a speed adjustment.

Check the center of the front panel just above the base for four tiny holes. It may have been an ICS machine, although if there's no repeater present it seems unlikely.

One of the main differences between an "A" and "B" was the Spring was wider and thicker, the same as a "Home". That also resulted in the case being ½" deeper than an "A. You might want to check this on the machine.

What is the serial number?? As George says see if there are 4 holes in the knife edge that would make it a redone ICS machine. Also does the carriage have a roller on the front.?? Edison repurposed machines when they were returned and you may have one of there odd balls. I just got an early standard suitcase A and it has no serial number. It should be a 2 latch from the characteristic on the machine but who knows. Edison did some strange things .. Owners also did some modifications to there machines to upgrade them . When Edison standard 2 and 4 latch machines were outmoded by the new case, Edison offered a modification for a small price to put them in the new case. Tom B

I would second checking the serial number.

Aside from the attachment on the straight edge, the ICS repeater also had a different carriage, with a lever lift instead of the button. This might have been changed by an Edison dealer; but there is also the possibility that some surplus ICS mechanisms might have been sold off by the factory without the repeater.

All in all, it is, as the saying goes, "a puzzlement".

Looks to me like someone simply put Edison Standard model A works into an Edison Standard model B cabinet.

Granted, the crank obviously appears to correct for Edison Standard B,C,D,E,F models. Has the crank been modified with a slot cut into it to fit an Edison Standard model A crank shaft?

If the crank is threaded then it's also possible that some enterprising person 'married' Edison Standard model A top works with an Edison Standard model B motor.

I can see nothing ICS assembly related (or modifications for) in the pictures. Only common Edison Standard Model A works in a Standard model B cabinet using what appears to be a model B,C,D,E,F crank.

Serial number is : S 330497

The motor is clean. If someone marries it together they did a great job. Its not a shotty job. The crankis defiantly a B crank not modified. Ill attach more pics. It is the same height but ¼ inch less on the length. Everything that I can see on top is identical to my B except for the cabinet size and speed control..

From looking at the pictures I would say it a Model-B top and motor. What is different is that it has a Model-A speed control arm and a speed adjusting knob. I wonder if the person who owned the machine had it modified so that he could adjust the speed from the top rather than from underneath. I think it a great idea. It's the reason I wouldn't sell my green oak banner Standard. I use it to test and play brown wax cylinders that play at various speeds. Having the speed control on top makes things much simpler. I doubt this came from the factory that way but may have been done by a dealer or the owner of the machine himself or herself.
