Autographed(???) Irving/Jack Kaufman Record

Post by Pathe Logical »

"Compliments of Irving & Jack Kaufman Oct 5 1925"

I bought a box of records today, and found the writing on the B-side of this disc intriguing. I don't think these are autographs of either Kaufman brother, but I'm really not sure. Does anyone have an autograph of either Irving or Jack Kaufman to compare to the signatures on the record label pictured below? I can't find an autograph of either artist on the internet (perhaps I'm not looking in the right place).

Thanks for your input,
Bob

I hope that you receive a reply. It's frustrating as to the inane topics that receive lots of chatter (not to mention the foolish diversions away from the main topic that gratify personal whims like a cat playing with yarn), whereas something that has merit such as this gets the silent treatment.

If you ever find out, let us know. Most signatures that I've seen in white ink have almost completely faded, and the date listed on yours makes it all the more intriguing.

The problem is that the OP is right- there's really no signature data out there to confirm or deny whether the sig(s) are legit.

The October 1925 date seems about right for this record.

Sometimes, big record stores or department stores would host recording celebrities who would autograph their records if you purchased them. This was a semi- common practice in the late 1930s and the postwar '40s but not sure about the mid '20s.

I would tend to think this is authentic because it's not a big money autograph that someone would fake. That said... is it Irving or Jack who signed it?

Thanks for the two responses thus far to my original post! Maybe this will get someone to dig out their Kaufman autographed records and/or photos for comparison :D ! So far, no one has come forward with any meaningful information one way or the other. I'll let you know if anything ever comes to light.

Still hoping,
Bob

In terms of autographed records from the 20's I have three. A Nick Lucas Brunswick, a Gennett Bernie Cummins and a Blue Columbia Ted Lewis. All are signed in white ink. The Ted Lewis is signed "Yours in jazz, Ted Lewis 3/19/1923". The Lewis is very faded but the other two are in remarkable condition. I've always been curious about the circumstances and surroundings where these autographs were done.

When I first read your post I thought "No Way!" on the blue Columbia Lewis until I realized you were referring to the label and not the shellac.

I have a ton of these from the postwar 1940s from a big record store in coastal Oregon town, of all places. The original owner bought the record and pasted the newspaper announcement of the appearance on the sleeve, then had the record signed. These were in a collection that a friend of mine consigned for me to put on eBay about 10 years ago. The ones that didn't sell are mostly in storage with the exception of a Dorsey disc that I kept as partial commission.

All were signed in white ink.

The most intriguing one was a Jimmie Lunceford release that he signed a day or two before he suddenly died in Seaside, Oregon on tour.

It was just amazing the big names that toured even the po- dunkiest places in those days. Of course, in the summer, Seaside was a big tourist draw from Seattle and Portland.
