Edison Home Model E

There is a Edison Home Model E combination for sale locally. It does not have the horizontal carriage for the Type O reproducer on it, rather a regular angled carriage for a C or H. Could it have came this way or has someone changed the carriage? Also, not knowing anything about these, I see that it has 2 pulleys to the left of the mandrel. I assume that you either set it up to play 2 min or 4 min depending on how the belt is installed? Thanks

The Home Model-E was introduced in March 1911. It was available with a horizontal carriage and a Model-O reproducer or a standard carriage with a Model-R Reproducer. You describe the machine as having to pulleys. Actually to change from 2-min to 4-min you pull out what you call the second pulley, you do not move the belt. Hope this helps. Yes, you can use any small body Reproducer such as a Automatic, B, C, H, K, R, or S.

You can also upgrade the carriage easily enough to horizontal to use an O or diamond B (for blue amberols). With that, you can also still use a C, H, K etc using a reducing ring, which Ron Sitko sells repros of rather cheaply. It's a nice option to have IMO.

I agree with both Sean and Rich. All of the model E Edison Homes I've seen over many years have the horizontal carriage and either a diamond model B or model O reproducer. It's a nice Edison model to own but be wary of the notorious pot metal mandrel bearing which is often found swelled and seizing the mandrel shaft good and tight on Edison model C, D, E, F cylinder phonographs. I would suggest before you purchase this, if you decide to purchase this, that you determine whether the mandrel spins freely. If it does not then you have to consider whether you can remove that bearing. I've done many of these over the years successfully but it can be a challenge for your first one.
