I Didnt Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier-Indestructable 2 Minute

Post by hearsedriver »

I read where the song "I didnt raise my boy to be a soldier" was the #1 song in 1915. I happen to have it on an Indestructable 2 minute cylinder (1524). I went looking for one for sale to see if it had any value but couldnt find one. Is this a cylinder that is hard to find? If the song was that popular, I wouldnt think so but, I sure cant find one for sale anywhere. Thanks

Edited from Edison to Indestructible.

If you have a 2M cylinder, it's probably not an Edison; they were done in 1912 and your song is from 1915. This song did come out on Blue Amberol in 1915. It is not listed in Koenigberg's 2M book. Perhaps you have an Indestructible or other non-Edison cylinder?

I vaguely recall reading in Ray Wile's Diamond Disc book that the Diamond Disk version was withdrawn "for patriotic reasons". WWI was in progress and the USA was debating entry, which would come in 1917. It would not surprise me if the cylinder were withdrawn for similar reasons. I have seen the Diamond Disc, but I don't recall having seen a copy of this this on cylinder.

According to this source, Edison 1524 is a Blue Amberol "Silver Bell" by Ada Jones and Billy Murray:

That's an Indestructible, not an Edison.

I have that cylinder. It's good and clear. I don't think they are rare.

I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier
I brought him up to be my pride and joy
Who dares to place a musket on his shoulder
To shoot some other mothers darling boy.
Let nations arbitrate there future troubles
It's time to lay swords down and turn away
There'd be no war today
If mothers all would say:
"I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier"

A neat title, though awfully late for a 2 minute cylinder!

Thanks for sharing.
