Post by soundgen »

Howson single string Phonofiddle and bow £285.00 + Postage , good condition see pictures , slight split in horn and felt on rest needs replacing , Item will be posted at buyers risk as Musical Instruments cannot be insured through the post

This can be collected in the Uk from our Stall at the Westway Market , under the Westway in Portobello Road , London on Saturdays or Sundays, or from Spitalfields Market on Thursdays or our Bedford workshop other weekdays

Interesting addition to a phonograph / Gramophone collection as they were used to make early acoustic recordings

Is this a variation of the Stroh Violin?

It works something on the same principle. I think, however, the Phonofiddle was meant more as a novelty instrument, rather than for acoustic recording. The single string tends to bear that out.

The phonofiddle has a history in early recordings.

If anyone has a cylinder featuring a phonofiddle I would be interested in it.
