Variations of the Edison Standard 10 Panel Horn

Post by hearsedriver »

Today, I picked up my second standard 10 panel horn and was surprised that it didnt have a "patent" label. At first, I thought it had just rubbed of but saw no evidence that it had ever had one. Then, I found a stamped patent date, Aug.1905,1906. I never knew they stamped the patent dates on these horns. I can also feel a noticeable difference in the weight of this horn compared to the one I have with the patent label. Another difference is where the crane hook attaches. This one has a diamond shaped plate where the ring attaches and the other has a bow tie shaped plate where the ring attaches. Were these horns made by more than one manufacturer?

The horn with the diamond-shaped hanger was manufactured by the Standard Metal Manufacturing Company. The one with the bow-tie-shaped hanger was manufactured by the Tea Tray Company.

You're very welcome. :)

There's an article in the December 2012 issue of The Sound Box (now The Antique Phonograph), that outlines production differences between the major horn manufacturers so that unmarked/stripped/repainted examples can be identified. Horns can be an interesting topic.

I agree. Very interesting. I like horns as much as the phonos themselves!
