Yes, but not the Victor factory.briankeith wrote:A Victor Exhibition Reproducer with a volume control? Never seen one of these before,, are they factory made ??
That's a "Crescent Tone Regulator" manufactured by the Crescent Talking Machine Co. in Chicago. This device and a couple of others are illustrated on page 125 of Antique Phonograph Accessories & Contraptions. Several other devices designed to do the same thing are illustrated on pages 84-87 of Antique Phonograph Gadgets, Gizmos, and Gimmicks.

These were third party add-on gadgets. Over the years I bid on a few of them, but never won. I think it would be neat to have one for an outside horn machine. Would safe a sock

Incidentally... don't know if you've ever heard or used the phrase "put a sock in it!" for "quiet down", but this is exactly where this comes from... the early outside horn phonograph era!alang wrote:These were third party add-on gadgets. I know, sharing this tidbit is part of every phonograph presentation at my home. Everyone knows the phrase, so it's always a big AHH when they learn where it comes from. At the Johnson Victrola Museum in Dover, DE they even keep a big old woolen sock around to demonstrate it to every visitor.gramophone-georg wrote:Incidentally... don't know if you've ever heard or used the phrase "put a sock in it!" for "quiet down", but this is exactly where this comes from... the early outside horn phonograph era!alang wrote:These were third party add-on gadgets.
