INTERESTING BERLINER FIND!

Post by flashpanblue »

Hello,
No I didn't find a Berliner Gramophone but I did find an original shipping crate. It is for a " Canadian" Berliner. It has a very interesting label on the side with a 1906 date. The box has the same logo on both sides but one side has paint blotches on it. I wonder how many of these 110 year old crates have survived? Here are a few pictures.

To my eyes today, interesting that its text is all in English, no French text that I can see. When did Canada (or even Montreal) begin the dual-language labeling we see today? Also interesting is that, despite some paint spatters, the wood looks quite clean. Obviously it has been kept indoors all these years. A lucky find indeed!

Nice crate!

I'm a shipping crate guy (just the early ones the same approximate size as yours), and I've seen only 2 or 3 of those Canadian Berliner crates. It's too bad the U.S. Berliner operation didn't have such attractive crates - at least I've never seen one.

Congratulations! :)

Nice crate. Now you need to find the phonograph to fit it in. ;)
