SONORA PORTABLE

Post by toydk »

Is anyone familiar with this kind of Sonora portable? I saw it in a local antique store. It needs some work.

Thanks, Dean

Yes, these are cool little machines, the horn built into the lid makes for a really rather unique portable not used on machines in the US, but in the UK Decca marketed very similar machines as "trench" models. I'd certainly check it out of the price was reasonable / in line with whatever work it may need.

There was a post string on this forum about this model several years ago, showing a neat ad from 1920: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... ?f=2&t=516

What's the asking price? That would determine the level of interest, at least to me...

They are asking $90. A friend sent me these pictures. I haven't actually seen this phonograph to evaluate it's condition.

I have always liked this style of portable, similar to the DECCA portables... $90 seems like a fair price if it is working. You can always fix cosmetic issues, if necessary, but it might be hard to find parts if it isn't in working condition...
