Columbia Model C

Post by ChuckA »

I recently acquired another Model C, this one is housed in what was called the "Exhibitors" cabinet.
It was available in 1899 for an additional $5.

Here are the fancy case and plain case model C's side by side:

As you can see, in reality the case is the same as the Graphophone Grand:

The Columbia BC was also offered in the fancy Grand cabinet. I have a BC in the fancy Grand cabinet that is completely original.

My theory is that Columbia over estimated the sales numbers for the GG and ordered to many cases. So they used them up for any model that would fit. They also sold them for use in the Morse Automatic Telegraph:

That's great Chuck - it certainly dresses up a Type C. :)

A friend of mine has a BC in the fancy cabinet and reports that it differs slightly in dimensions from the Grand cabinet. Is your C exhibitor's cabinet the same dimensions as the GG cabinet?

George,

I never measured the base case sizes, until reading your comment. They are slightly different:

GG = 18 ⅛" W x 12 ⅝" D x 6 ⅞" H

C = 17 ¼" W x 11 ⅛" D x 6 ½" H

You have the later GG cabinet, how does it compared with these measurements?

Nice Columbia Model C. That's one of the reasons I love the early Columbia cabinets from about 1898 -03. It's those fancy ornate cases that I am attracted to.

A beautiful pair showing the contrast of progress, Chuck. I really like seeing such a tangible difference in design philosophy.

My GG cabinet is 17 ⅞" wide x 12 ¼" deep x 7" tall.
