RCA 2-65 brake

I purchased a RCA 2-65 and can not get the brake to work correctly. It will not stay off unless I hold the manual lever. Any ideas. This is the first 2-65 I have seen. My other RCAs are different models

Do you start the Victrola by moving the tonearm all the way to the right? That engages the auto-brake mechanism, as shown in this video -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmcdUd83PxE -- It also shows the correct position of the all of the brake's components starting at 4:06 in the video.

Hi. I just bought a 2-65 in April. I cleaned and oiled the automatic start/stop and brake. That helped a lot. Also, I had to experiment with it in different positions to get it set right. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Thanks to everyone's help I got the brake working nicely, next week I will work on the reproducer. The brake needed a slight adjustment and a little grease, the reproducer needs soldered in the center and I lent my pencil soldering iron out. I get it back next week. Tom B

When you apply the solder, no more than a "whisper" should be applied--just enough to hold it.

I once had an HMV 5a sound box that had been overhauled by a well-known repairman. While everything else was done correctly, he put a blob of solder on the joint about the size of a small pea. This gave the reproduction a horrible wavering tone that wasn't cured until the solder was removed and replaced.
