Which reproducer would you use ?
Just picked up this little beauty yesterday. As you can see it has a wrong reproducer on it. The serial # 536540 so with research it leads me to believe it came with a number 2. But reading past archives there is a disagreement between the exhibition and the number 2. So I ask which one would you go with . By the way I don't know what reproducer is on there but it sounds pretty good.

The reproducer you have seems to have an aluminum diaphragm. The original for this machine could be an exhibition or a Victor 2, both mica diaphragms, but if this one sounds good I would keep it there, it is more recent than the originals and may actually sound better than the Victors.

#2. To me, the "fat" tonearm always means #2.

Based on the serial number, it should have originally utilized a No. 2 reproducer. I used information from the Victor Victrola page, which is a very solid source.

As noted -- http://www.victor-victrola.com/IX.htm -- the #2 sound box is correct, but if you decide to get one, if I were you, I'd definitely hang onto the sound box that came with it. It looks like a high quality Orthophonic sound box clone, probably from the late-1920s to mid-1930s. Restored with fresh gaskets and adjusted--if needed--it should do a very nice job playing electrically recorded records.
As for an Exhibition vs. a No. 2 sound box, I'd have to say that the No. 2 is louder and more expansive sounding than the Exhibition--if overhauled with fresh, soft gaskets and carefully tuned.

On the trader, Eric Skaggs is selling a very nice No. 2 reproducer for $40.00. That's a great deal, and you'll have the correct reproducer for your VV IX.

I vote for a Victrola #2 also. $40.00 is a good price for the one in the trader section.

Re: Which reproducer would you use ?
My girlfriend has a VV-VIII which has been in the family since new. It has a No. 2 which I'm confident is original.
I bought Eric's #2, and a few others, so I could make a mold to reproduce the one piece gasket. It's almost ready and I should have a couple #2's (with new gaskets
) available soon.
