A Pretty Good Day

Made a long drive this morning and just returned home. Through the 'grapevine' I was able to make a deal on an Edison Concert phonograph with a large brass horn and 48 Edison Concert cylinders (all of which appear to be in nice playing condition). There are some very interesting early titles in the group - some of which I've never seen or heard of on any Edison wax cylinder and I have quite a few early Edison brown wax cylinders. There was a tiny bit of rain on my parade, however. The drawer is missing... If anyone can help me with finding an original drawer I would be sincerely grateful and would be pleased to pay your price for it. I'll post an ad in the Yankee Trader section too. A drawer from an Edison Spring Motor should also fit, I believe. The oak grain surrounding the drawer won't match the replacement drawer, of course, but I would be incredibly happy with any original drawer. The only other tiny disappointment was that the reproducer with it was a model J (4 minute Edison reproducer specifically for the Concert model). The condition of this Edison Concert is very nice original indeed and it runs smoothly. And there are no tinkling solder pieces inside the mandrel as is commonly found with Edison Concerts as the mandrel spins! It came with one of the early crane tops that has the circular "O" hole for the horn rather than the typical "C" shape crane top. Anyway it was a fun day. A lot of windshield time though...and through plenty of rain that made for a white knuckle grip on the steering wheel most of the way home. So I'm looking for an Edison model D reproducer and a drawer. If you have either or both please send me a PM. And as mentioned I will post an ad in the Trader too. Oh...and I also bought two old original wooden (Moxie) crates full of Moxie bottles that the Edison Concert owners also had to sell! No idea why I bought them and my wife doesn't know about those yet. But the Moxie crates and Moxie bottles looked so old and interesting...and pretty dirty too so I had to buy them as well. It'll be fun cleaning all those bottles.

WOW!!! Nice find. Especially with that many Concert records. I have never seen a model J 4-minute reproducer. I am sure someone here will be able to help with the drawer and D reproducer.

Doug if you look at this link you will find the dimensions of the drawer. This is a drawer from one of my Concerts that was in parts when I bought the machine. If you can't find one you could have one made. Hope this helps you.

As for the J reproducer: I did not even know that a 4 minute reproducer was ever made for Concert machines. Does this imply there were 4 minute Concert cylinders? Or was it made for Concerts modified to play standard cylinders?

Thank you everyone for your gracious comments. It truly was a remarkable day for me. It's been a looong time since I've experienced one of those days like yesterday. I'm sure many of you who have had similar days like that can identify with the anticipation and 'joyful anxiety' that I experienced that accompanies your drive out to actually see what is waiting for you. And (ugh!) the possibility that sometime between the phone calls to set up the visit and actually finalizing the deal that you will receive the dreaded "Sorry but I've changed my mind about selling it". Thankfully this time all went as planned in spite of the lousy rainy weather.

Bill, as far as I know there were never any 4 minute Concert cylinders. The model J reproducer came out late (1909!) and I believe was only offered for less than 2 years to owners of Concerts who wanted to purchase the Amberola 'kit' for their Concert to play 4 minute Amberol cylinders.

Again, thank you everyone. Hopefully I can find a model D reproducer soon and a drawer too.

I was surprised to see a J Reproducer in company with all those Concert cylinders. Had your machine been converted to play standard-size cylinders?
