Amature digs in
So I purchased a Victor vv-ix last week with a no name reproducer. When played I kept hearing a loud thumping sound and the motor had black hard grease all over it.(pictures) so after a little reading and a couple of u tube videos I said to myself I got this how hard can it be. How strong can the spring really be I'm a construction worker I'm strong . So I take the motor apart with no problem and then came the spring like I said I got this . Well after getting smacked in the face twice and the second time the smake sent my glasses flying across the garage I learned the springs are pretty strong they kicked my butt made me look like a little girl. Well after about 5 hours got it came out great no more thumping. Man I love these phonographs.

Great job! And doesn't it give you a great feel of satisfaction when you get done and it works? Looks like you will be doing many more springs in the coming years.
Happy phonograph hunting!

I enjoy a person that has the ability to tell a story and laugh at himself. It's a great quality. Welcome to the hobby.

Once you do an Edison mainspring, the Victors are a piece of cake. Its just a matter of technique really. I do enjoy it though.

Indeed: I think I gave up doing my own mainspring work after the BC-34....hearsedriver wrote:Once you do an Edison mainspring, the Victors are a piece of cake. Its just a matter of technique really. I do enjoy it though.
My first mainspring repair was with my VV-IX as well: one of them had suddenly broken near the center, and I managed to wrestle it out. With my stepfather's help, we annealed the end and made a new hole.

If you secure the canister, being careful not to damage it, and twist the spring out one coil at a time from the center, it goes quite well. Installation is the same process reversed. Be sure to properly lube the motor and it should be good for the next 90 years. Be warned, this can be an addictive hobby. I starts with one and the next thing you know they are every where, (that is not a bad thing).
