The Preacher and the Bear

Post by Energ15 »

Can anyone tell me if a 2 min version of "The Preacher and the Bear" is rare? I've seen an awful lot of four minute versions but no 2 min versions yet. I just got this record and I was thinking that it could have some value.

Good question. I just checked and found that I have a 4 minute Indestructible copy as well as a #9000 Edison 2 minute copy. Not sure about value though.

As far as I know, no version is particularly value. It was extremely popular and sold many copies on all formats. I think the announced BA version is probably the most desirable (& expensive) of all versions.

This looks like a nice 2 minute copy. May give us a current market value when it ends.

$50+ for that!?

Don't go by eBay to give you values, it's not exactly accurate.

As Shane says, no version of "Preacher" is very rare. I have two copies of both the unannounced and the announced BAs with original boxes and lids, none cost me more than the usual few bucks. I've got two of the two minute Edisons and one on 4 minute Edison wax, one on two minute Columbia wax and another on Albany Indestructible (possibly two, one two minute and one four minute, but I'm not home to check).

I always grab different versions as they turn up, but never for more than a few bucks. I probably have at least 15 different disc recordings of it as well, again, it isn't rare, but in this case, two people wanted it badly enough.

It does seem a bit high for the 2 min wax IMO. I was expecting maybe $30-35.
I think the last announced BA I saw sold for around $40, but that was a year or more ago.If I remember correctly, an Indestructible went for $15 around the same time.
I guess like most cylinders, they can sell for $50 one week & $20 the next, depending how many people are after a copy at any given time.
