Columbia 800-810 record albums original photo

Post by larryh »

I have tried to find a Viva Tonal Columbia 800 or higher showing the original albums that would have matched the record player. So far I have not seen any on youtube or in the google search of photos. Perhaps they didn't come with a stock album set? I tired four matching albums I have here but they are black on the binder ends and just don't seem right for the cabinet.

Did you see the 810 in the Ebay and Craigslist Ads. It shows an 810 with a close up view of the album. I have an 800 that came with a set of albums, but they don't say Viva Tonal. They look like the older Columbia albums, which are rare also. Marc.

I see a post card on ebay showing a 810 from Canada. It appears to simply have no albums in the openings. Its not 100% since the drawing is a bit less than perfect detail. Still it seems to have no albums with it.

Take a look at my reply in the post below. This is the type of albums they came with. Good luck finding any, I've never seen any in person except this one I have.

Sean,

I would have been quite surprised that they installed that design as its certainly representative of older type machines. Somehow I would have expected a more modern update? Then too Columbia was late to the game and some of its construction seems to be still experimental and then shortly they gave up the mechanical versions. Perhaps they simply didn't want to spend the money on yet another item for a poor market?

I'm not sure I understand you. The album I pictured in the other thread is not the earlier black "Grafonola" type, but a later design I've only seen in a couple of VT machines...I've only got just one album like it and as you can see, it's pretty much falling apart.

Now that I've got the four albums :D , I guess it's time to buy a big Viva-tonal Columbia to put them in ;) !!! Patent date inside front covers is May 12, 1925.

That be them. You beat me to posting a picture of the albums. These are nice. I need one more for my 810 if anyone has an extra.....

Larry, Did you check the 810 for sale in the Auctions and Craigslist section. If they were made in 1925, that was before Columbia started the Viva-Tonal name. For a while their records had a new label without the Viva-Tonal name. It looks like they are right that the albums for the Viva Tonal Columbias were the ones with the large Columbia Musical Note logo:

Sounds pretty solid to me. I guess the somewhat plain design surprised me. Thanks for showing these.
