Babson Bros Automatic Stop for Edison standards

Post by EdisonWizard »

Thanks to HisMastersVoice, I was able to pick up this nifty little thing after I purchased the Standard D from him. I made a short video for your amusement and in case anyone was wondering how it works. Simple solution really. https://youtu.be/VrybHJW5kas

3rd owner of the Standard which is awesome. See how quiet it runs? Lol thanks HisMastersVoice!

Glad you're enjoying it! It's a very nice machine, and it was tough to part with, but it runs too well to be a dust collector. When you have a Standard sitting next to an Opera, well...it never got used. The Babson stop is a very clever little gadget, and so simple. Makes you wonder why Mr. Edison hadn't thought of it first and sold them as an upgrade.

I wouldn't mind picking up one of those.

I could use two of them for my Standard "B" and my Standard "D"..

Someone was reproing these a few years ago...as they are a simple design.

Does anyone remember who it was?

I don't know who did, however if you're interested I could get you some close up pics and some measurements if you want to make your own. It wouldn't be hard at all, it's basically just a little smaller diameter than a wire clothes hanger. Hardest part would be the wheel but even that you could just improvise a piece of leather on the end like a gramophone brake.

Indeed. Let me get some good pics. I can't find my mike anywhere so I'll make do with a tape measure.

I found this pic from a similar discussion a few years ago. This is one on a Model "B" Standard. I don't know how different one would be for a Model "D" Standard.....whether it would be the same or a bit different. Here is a NEW REPRO AUTOMATIC stop installed on a Model "B" Standard that someone on the TMF was making and selling. I have no idea who it was.. Maybe other TMF members can help.

SEE THE PIC!

Works about the same but there are some differences. The Stop on the "D" is on the right side of the main mandrel pulley, looks like that one presses against the gears? But that's due to the differences in mechanics and how the machines are built. Can't really tell if that one would work on the D and above. I meant to take some pics etc but I got busy and had to come to work so I'll get some detailed info tomorrow. For now, here's a pic I got from HisMastersVoice when he showed it to me.

It would be great for someone to REPRO these again as they are very Simple and not complicated to make at all...and the fact that they really don't alter the machine.

A great opportunity for someone willing to do the work.

I'm sure that someone will take on the project....as these would be great sellers!
