Those little wooden tabs, projecting down at left and right above the shelf, were put there to keep the 12-inch record album set from tipping off. See picture below.

Rightmost, small, wooden "hanging piece" or "tab" can be seen at the top center cover of album "E" (above the HMV logo) doing its job --- keeping the record albums from falling of the shelf. An identical wooden piece contacts the center back cover of album "A".

My Oak Spider Leg X has these tabs on the sides only and never on front or back. Proof in pic above that the purpose is to hold the albums. Funny thing I never noticed these tabs until now. Joe
