Straight out fraud on ebay

Post by Django »

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Victor- ... 2431274469?

The story that goes with this one is pure bull and the seller should be charged with fraud, but so far, after 3 complaints by me, it is still listed as is and ebay does nothing. Selling these crapophones as antiques is nothing new, but the lies this seller spews and the fact that they have a bidder for $999.00 plus $79.00 for shipping brings it to a new level.

If you have the energy, please join me in this complaint to ebay.

Thanks

One of the many things that annoys me about eBay is that they make it nearly impossible to report an item. Once upon a time you could offer some evidence. Now you can only choose from two drop-down menus, and they don't apply. I can't find any way with their current system to report this as fraudulently described.

I had no problem reporting it as a counterfeit. It looks more like the sellers account has been highjacked to me. It happens all the time on Ebay.

That's pretty much by design. See the article I posted in the "Edison Home" thread a couple topics down.

eBay is fine with this, from the CEO on down.

That is why knowledge is power. Before ebay and internet auctions, there were live auctions and antique dealers. It's the buyers responsibly to research the item before purchase. Auctions and antique dealers were as as. Don't get me wrong, but there are very honest dealers. It's too bad that ebay allows this practice. But on the other hand buyers have to do their homework. If this poor schnook buys this machine, and eventually finds out it's a fake, then that will be a hard lesson. When buying on ebay or any auction or antique dealer, Caviet Emptor(spelling?). That means let the buyer beware.

I checked the bidding history. The bidder retracted their bid.

The "elderly mother-in-law" must have been from India if she had this as a little girl and apparently the word "elderly" is up for interpretation...

Original seller's description:
"Antique Victor Victrola Phonograph With external Brass Horn in good working condition. Finish is original and the horn is very nice with no dings or dents. This belonged to my elderly Mother-in-Law since she was little and gifted to us many years ago so I know it is an original. We are remodeling and this doesn't fit so it's time for somebody else to enjoy it. If you are looking at this you already know that these External Horn Victors are becoming much harder to find. Immediate pay with Paypal only please. I will ship in two boxes and charge flat rate of $79.00 (with insurance) but if shipping is less I will refund difference to your Paypal - if more I will pay added costs."
