Found Ebonoid 5 minute gearing!

Post by 12jslater »

I purchased an Edison standard B for £250 which had a diamond b reproducer, it does not have Edison gearing it has gears from the clarion record company as you know they made 2 and a half minute cylinders by adding extra length to the cylinder (standard 100 tpi).

As four minute records they made wax cylinders at 200tpi which combined with the extra length gave a playing time of 5 minutes and for this they made gearing for 200tpi playback, meaning they can also play standard four minute cylinders.

It is remarkable what people in those early years could come up with to modify machines. That is the first I have seen but it was in one of the books I have read. I bet there are a bunch more attachments out there we have not found yet. Tom B
