Is this really meant to display cylinders? If not, what is it?

Re: Cylinder Display? on Lexington, KY Craigslist
Wine bottles perhaps? I don't think it is ment to display cylinders as simple shelving would be cheaper and look much better than displaying the cylinders on their side like this.
Thanks, Jake

I think it may be an Edison dealer display... a wine rack holds bottles at an angle. You could read the titles on the caps to pick what you wanted and would take up less space than a side to side shelving display.

Seller's description: "Very neat old display stand for the old Edison cylinder records. All wood with detail molding. Two sliding pieces on the back to remove the cylinders."

Sure looks like a wine bottle rack to me. Even has the back for the bottle necks to go through.

At first blush, it doesn't look like the openings are large enough, or deep enough, for wine bottles.

I have never seen a wine rack that didn't tilt the bottles top down to keep the corks wet and this appears to have horizontal holes... I still think this is a store display, especially since it has a small tray on the bottom front to place your selections in...rgordon939 wrote:Sure looks like a wine bottle rack to me. The holes appear to be exactly the size for cylinders and wine bottles are definitely larger than cylinders...
Have I ever been wrong...? Never...

I agree, since the main part of the cabinet appears to be a little less deep than a cylinder box. The picture is somewhat deceiving but IF a wine bottle could fit in the case, more than half of it would stick out...FloridaClay wrote:At first blush, it doesn't look like the openings are large enough, or deep enough, for wine bottles.

Why can't it be what he says it is? I've seen cylinder racks like that. It is not a wine bottle rack. The "neck holes" some have cited, do not line up with the openings. Plus wine bottles are not stored "neck down".

I can not be a wine rack. It does not keep the bottles at 50 degrees F. It seems thin for a cylinder rack too. Maybe he is right and it was used as a dealer rack that would take less space. It could have been a specialized food rack or parts rack too. It will make a unique cylinder display rack. Tom B
