Edison Model E standard frozen mandrel

Looking at an Edison standard model E with a frozen mandrel. Haven't dealt with this model before. Does it have a mandrel bearing? How hard are they to replace? Also has a model N reproducer. What do I need to look for on this model? I'm supposed to take a look at it tomorrow. Thanks Jan.

Yes, the Model E Standard has the same pot metal mandrel bearing as the Model D. It's a job that you can do. There are threads detailing the repair and a search should give you all the help you need. Thanks Jerry. It has a model N reproducer. I know it is a 4 minute machine only but does the N play BAs or only 4 min amberals?

The Model N reproducer has a sapphire stylus so it can be used on 4-minute wax Amberol cylinders or Blue Amberol celluloid cylinders. Any reproducer with a diamond stylus should play only 4-minute Blue Amberol or other 4-minute celluloid records.

Does the machine have it's original horn? That would make it more desirable as the Standard E was the only Edison machine to have a blue flowered horn as original equipment. I had an E years ago with the N reproducer, sadly, I sold it. Been kicking myself ever since.

I'm restoring one now and just replaced the mandrel bearing. The thread Jerry mentioned is a huge help, as is the Wyatt's Musical Americana tutorial. http://www.wyattsmusical.com/centBearing.html and http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =7&t=17596 I read both before replacing the bearing on my Standard D and this E.

Please feel free to PM me if I can help you, but Jerry's offer is much better! My newest one was missing the reproducer and the horn, so it won't be nearly as desirable as the one I sold. Still will be a nice machine, though, as will yours I'm sure.

Thanks Matt. I'm sure I'll have some questions. Can't wait to get out of the house on Sat. Been trapped inside since Sunday. The rain is letting up now and no flooding at our house but lots of flooding around us.

The standard E is a little odd ball. It only plays four minute cylinders. Edison fixed it so it would not shift to two minute mode. The standard D and F will play both. It can be changed to play 2/4 minute cylinders but that would compromise it. I have one that shifts and may change it to the four minute mode only. Look in the lid of the standard. Some come with a E tag covering the reproducer tag. That makes the deal better., Also the latches in the lid should be three screws to hold them on instead of four.
