Victor VTLA 3185 - No Model Stamp?

Post by CDBPDX »

Just brought home a fair Victor VTLA L-door phonograph. Missing some parts, at least 1 bad spring, a broken foot, but beautiful!

The ID plate shows the serial number 3185 and that coincides with the 'conditions' sticker dated Feb 1, 1907 but there is no model number stamped. Doesn't look like there ever was. Is this a frequent occurrence?

Mine is a bit earlier - I'll try to go out and look at the plate soon.

Great score Cliff! Missing model on ID plate makes that VTLA that much more interesting. Please post photos after clean up and restore. Steve

Maybe the worker didn't know whether to mark it 'VTLA" or "XVI." It would be fun to note the serial number range where the change was made. Jerry B.

The VTLA to XVI designation switch was between 12301 and 12698 in 1909.

Another interesting bit - this ID plate is mounted on the motor board left of the tone arm base, a similar phonograph serial number 6405 had the ID plate mounted to the back board on the left. When did that change?

Next question... When was the transition from the "flat top VTLA" to the later traditional domed top VTLA? Jerry

The VTLA I brought home today, serial number 3185, is just like yours. I had another one, serial number 6405, and the ID plate was on the back board.
