Looking for 2 drawers for an oak Edison C19...

Over here in Europe, the larger Edison Diamond Disc machines are scarce, due to their weight...

Recently someone offered me an Edison C19 in oak, so far so good, but... the two drawers are missing

How simple will it be to find 2 in the US, or would it be better only buy the hardware (if possible) and reproduce it by a furniture maker ?

What would you suggest ?

Do you have a picture of the open cabinet? I’m curious to see it since I thought 19s had only record slots. It must be a really early 19 using left over 250 hardware. Fran would know of course.

Have you tried the usual phono business guys this side of the pond yet? Victrola Doctor, Shenandoah, Wyatts, etc?

If it had the drawers originally, it should have the guides for them on each side. Does it have those? A photo would clarify that.

Do you have the serial number handy? C 19s were equipped with one of 4 different record storage compartment systems, whereas the C 250 was produced with only the first type of system: the 2-drawer, 5-compartment system.

I compiled a limited features database (as a companion to my 4-part series of articles on the Edison "Chippendale" Diamond Disc Phonograph models C 250 andC 19) with production estimates; which is readily available for the general public's use, at https://www.antiquephono.org/, by following this link: https://www.antiquephono.org/edison-c-2 ... -1925-pdf/.

Be sure to use the "key" provided at the bottom of the page for explanations to the various codes I used to identify which record storage system was observed with a particular machine's serial number. You'll find there is a specific range of serialization for each type of storage system, and the approximate time frame they were produced.

I'll be happy to answer any further related questions you may have.

Thanks Fran. I wonder why the transition? Having the regular slotted version I find myself wishing for a standard drawer with sleeves! Those slots are a pain but I do think this version would be easier to retrieve the discs than the later vertical ones.

It's my personal belief that the co. was experimenting with the vertical slotted storage while the drawers were still being used. I assume they desired to use up the large inventory of drawers before producing the "updated" version of their Chippendale -- the C 19 -- scheduled to make its debut in April 1919. The same system of vertical slots was also to be used for many of their other post-1919 models.

From at least a manufacturing point of view, it would have made sense to streamline production by utilizing the same system on multiple cabinets.

The drawers with slots were very short lived.

To the OP: I hope some of this information results in your ability to procure the proper record storage system your C 19 requires. I don't believe it should be terribly difficult to find the earlier 2-drawer, 5-compartment drawers you might need, but the transitional 2-drawer, individual record slotted drawers would likely be problematic.
