Question about a two piece Gem horn????????

Post by Jerry B. »

I bought a two piece Gem horn that was repainted years ago and I would like to unscrew the two pieces. I stripped the paint off the outside and tried... not luck. Next I heated the threaded area with DeeDee's hair drier (I don't need a hair drier but don't use the "B" word) but once again I had no luck. Any suggestions besides Rogain? Thanks, Jerry Blais

Hi Jerry, You can try a butane torch, but be careful not to melt any of the solder. I have used this method before on several turntables and cranks that were stubborn with good results.

If you can find a container big enough, you could soak it in caustic soda & water (I think you guys call it lye?) and after an hour or so, the paint should have disintergrated. If not, submerge the join again for another hour & try again.
Just be sure once it's apart to rinse well, and neutralise the caustic with milk or something & rinse well again, then put it in the sun to dry well.
