Help to ID please!

I thought this looked curious, so I put in a bid and won it. Does anyone recognize this model? Did I do something foolish?

It looks like a fairly early HMV No.2 to me.
A smooth nickel plated Victor backbrack, tonearm & morning glory horn should bolt straight on.

Congratulations, I think you did very well, but have some woodworking ahead of you.

Not sure of the model name but there were some small variations. Here 2 quite similar

Yours has classier moulding around the base probably indicating a model slightly higher in the original price hierarchy

Nice machines sidewinder. Do both machines have 10" turntables?
This is a 1913 Zonophone Compton, also made by HMV, and as you can see, there's little difference in the Zono cabinet too. (except mine has way more dust )

Hi, Yes, both 10 inch. And as you mention, after HMV took over Zonophone in the UK, the cases were the same, just sold under the different brands, kind of like VW & Skoda

Kind of odd to make 2 identical machines, but sell them at different prices, merely because 1 brand is more highly regarded than the other.

As they both have 10" turntables, they must be variations of the HMV No.5.
It is strange that the only real difference was the decal & price. The Zonophone even has a double spring motor, which I presume both your HMV's would have too (although by 1921 the No.5 had a single spring)
And not to be confused with the earlier "Style 5" trademark type machine.

Thanks for the info. I am still unclear as to which model it is. This has a 12" turntable and a double spring motor. The only other markings are "1162" stamped into the wood next to the spindle hole on the top side of the motor board, and a number "3" stamped into the wood on the bottom side of the motor board.

Last night I took it apart and stripped it. The original finish was too far gone to get back. This morning I glued the cracks. When re-assembling, do the side panels get glued to the corner mouldings, or are the panels left free to expand and contract with the weather?

I'll post a few before and after pictures soon! Now, does anyone have a bracket and tonearm cheap?
