HUGE Silvertone! (Orthophonic?) AND CHEAP!

Post by phonophan79 »

Look how big this machine looks! Perhaps a Silvertone "Orthophonic"? Only $150, looks to be in great shape too.

Wow,I have never seen anything like this in a Sears Silvertone before. It certainly looks like an orhtphonic era phonograph. I would like to see a close up of the tone arm and reproducer to be sure. Certainly worth a look at for anyone near it.

Personally I would enjoy a chance to at least hear it. I probably have a sears ad for that machine here somewhere.

Wow, neat so that is a radio-phono.

That seller doesn't even have the radio aspect pictured or listed.

Thanks for posting the ad! The bottom of the ad says "Cabinet shipped from our factory in Southern Michigan", so the unit hasn't gone far over the years. :-)

I wouldn't say that the one you have shown is with a radio, many of them came both ways depending on what you wanted in that era. I didn't notice till I had the ad posted that it mentions that more of it is shown on the opposite page. This is a reproduction Sears from 1927 and has a quite nice selection of cabinets. But the quality of the printed pages is poor, this one happened to look better than the most. It would seem that if the phonograph on craigslist had a radio the seller most likely would mention it, so probably it doesn't but then you never know.

I have a machine that looks very similar.
I think my machine is 1928 a fantastic machine
The top lid drops down into a writing desk.
I have only found out lately that a machine that looks the same as my one had a radio fitted.
I cannot see any sign of a radio been fitted to my cabinet and never knew what was meant to go in behind the lid until recently.
I don't know if my machine was exported new out to New Zealand and had the radio removed.
Does anyone have any more information on this machine

Kiwi,

Your right, if the machine is sold without the radio it will just have panels in place of the radio set. You see lots of latter acoustic Victrola's and Brunswicks with those double lids and no radio under them.. Then once in a while one shows up with the radio. With my luck and anything remotely approaching a radio still working from those days, I am happier to find them without..
