A new addition: A 1924 Tyrela table phonograph

New toy!
I saw this at an antique shop but it was very costly and marked firm. I figured whats the harm and made a cash offer... He took it
I really like it and I needed something for my library between the chairs. I will keep it around for a while and play with it. Sometimes I fall out of love with a phonograph and refuse to keep one that I don't really love due to space issues. I do that with records too. If I dont use them them for a year then they are gone.

This is a 1924 Tyrela Phonograph table. It is in amazing shape and it sounds real nice for being 100% original. The only thing I can see is that the stop is missing the leather. I know I am going to get guff for resting the needle on the platter but that is the only way to stop it from spinning right now.

Wow that is a really nice machine. I don't think I've seen such a nice round phonograph before and that inlay really sets it off. I have to add that I really like your listening set up too

That is a nice one. It displays well. Two years ago I came across one at a antique shop and they wanted $1800.00 for it. She Came down $300.00 but I did not have the cash. I regret not selling one of the kids but she had a nice oak VV 50 which I purchased. These do not come up very often. Tomb

Tyrela was a British company founded in 1922 by E.F.Tyler (get it?). They specialised in period design cabinets, of which yours was intended to resemble a Georgian wine cooler. Sadly many examples were re-purposed as drinks cabinets in their twilight years, but the model is now very popular with collectors.

Yours appears to be a nice example but be careful if you try to clean it, as what looks like inlay is likely to be applied transfers, or decals as you call them in the USA.

As to dating the machine, it was on sale from 1922 to about 1927.

If ever a gramophone could be described as "cute" this is it .
