WANTED: Morning Glory Horn

Post by cleveland1996 »

Hi Folks,

I am looking for a small self supporting morning glory horn. I have seen one recently that was 8 panels, but there may be variations...Anyone have a spare?

Thanks
Joe

no such thing. Every horn over 14" should be supported.

Thanks for the reply, but I have seen a 16 inch horn that is self supported...not for an Edison, but probably designed for a Columbia as it is better able to carry the extra weight....

Other than the rare Ideal Self-Supporting Aluminum Horn, the only self-supporting flower horn I've seen are the fantasy horns made by Karl Frick in the 1960s/70s. They were very light - being made from aluminum beer cans. The painting and striping were quite convincing (black with gold stripes are the only ones I've ever seen).

There are tiny morning glory horns (14" long with 12" bell) that can be used as self-supporting horns. They have a mounting ring but are light enough to ride a reproducer with no more drag than a normal 14" horn. I've seen a few of these used on Gems over the years. These were originally used on the Crown premium talking machines as well as table-top Reginaphones. They're hard to find.

Here's a 1909 Crown ad showing this sort of horn. This uses a crane, the angle of this reproducer mount can't support anything heavier than an aluminum Pathé horn.

That's interesting, Rene. I thought of these horns, but because they have a hanger, I didn't think they could ride the reproducer.

Thanks Rene for the clarification...the horn that I saw was the same style and appears to be the same size...I passed on it because I thought that it was overpriced, but now I see that I might should have grabbed it. It was a different color minus the flowers, but otherwise a pretty good match... might have had different color option or just have been repainted...

Thanks again ....
Joe

This post has been instructive and a good memory-jogger. And timing is a funny thing... This Frick horn (in red) just popped up on eBay. Remember this horn was made in the 1960s/70s:
