Rude comments on YouTube videos

Post by Paal1994 »

About a month ago I got a comment on my video of "The Broadway Melody by The Plaza Band" that I had the band pseudo wrong, but he couldn't fit the information into the comment, and I asked if he could send it in a private message, and he did. Now I've been very busy lately, and this is the first time I log on to the forum in several months, but I try to catch up with YouTube at least once a month, and that was when I suggested he could send the info in a PM. Now today I was catching up with everything again, and I was going to thank this user for the info he gave me, when I found he had left this comment on the video:

"@Paal1994 What is it about you people, you get a message of help and you can't say thankyou. You would sooner drool over the wrong song than be clever. Not so clever to buy over the net unless you have done your homework.Next time don't send
messages of help till your head is out of your A--"

Now, I always try to be polite when I reply to comments and messages, but when answering to this comment, I found that to be hard. I have found record and phonograph collectors to be some of the nicest people in the world, and this is my first bad experience. Hope I don't get to many more of these...

Have any of you every experienced something similar? If so, share your story! (If you want ;) )

I've had my fair share of crazy comments and messages on youtube too Paal. I think some people think you have nothing better to do than sit on youtube all day every day to respond to silly questions that they already know the answers to, make requests for songs that you've already post, or to tell you how evil you are for using a steel needle on a record.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of weird & impatient people out there, and youtube seems to attract them all :)
I've had quite a few messages sent telling me that the sound quality of my videos is too poor for their own use, and they want an MP3 of the song from me, without a please, thank you or kiss my a**.
On the opposite side of the coin, I've had some remarkably nice comments and messages sent, including several from people around the world who seem to think the sound quality is good enough for them to broadcast over radio- which they do.
I found that 99% of people who watch my videos have a genuine interest in the music I post, and really appreciate the effort of posting them (as small as that effort is), but the other 1% are either idiots or trolls who either want to complain, be smart a**es or cause trouble.
With so many videos posted, I got to the point awhile back were I had to switch off my PMs, because I'd be getting 10-20 messages every day. Most of them were decent messages, but I just haven't got 2 or 3 hours a day to sit down and answer everybody, so it was easier to just switch it off.
I also now simply delete any strange & rude comments left, and if the person becomes a problem, I just block them from leaving further comment. I have better things to do than play their game lol.
I guess in your situation, I would contact the person & appologize for not responding quicker, but explain to them that you haven't logged on in awhile, you've been busy with studies etc or whatever the case may be, and that you do appreciate their input. Any further problems with the person though, & they'd be gone
Lifes too short to put up with other peoples baggage.

Paal,

you will get all kinds of comments on YouTube (unfortunately) however as already indicated above almost all are positive in my experience. I can sympahise as I have had a few trolls as well and now rather than engage in their twisted types of games I now just block them - life really is too short.

In your case I would be tempted to give them the benefit of the doubt (just once) and set out an explanation and if at that point they are still abusive I would block them at that point. I have to say I do enjoy your postings on your page and I think from time to time we all make errors in recording dates, band details etc - we are human after all :D

You are so right, guys! There is a lot of strange people on YouTube! But luckily I haven't had any more bad experiences. As both of you said, there are some trolls, but mostly very nice people, and the good experiences is at least 98% of all YouTube experiences :D
