Wanted: 2 minute custom cylinder recording

Post by hardeen7 »

Greetings;
I am new to the hobby and recently purchased an Edison Standard Phonograph with C reproducer. I would like a cylinder made for it with a particular 2 minute recording. Who out there would do one off work like that? Thanks

Does he do indestructible 2-min cylinders? Or wax only?

He only does direct recordings on Wax, mainly brown I believe.

For a more permanent moulded resin cylinder, contact Duncan Miller at Vulcan Records, he offers a custom service, though bear in mind the price justifies making not only the records, but the master, metal mould and casting

Let me just say that Vulcan records does a fantastic job. Several years ago I commissioned them to produce a custom 4 minute cylinder of my beloved late Uncle Vinson telling a story about growing up during the depression. He was an amazing story teller and the entire family was extremely saddened by his passing. I happened to have recorded him telling one of his great stories on video camera on his last Christmas with us in 2010. I took the audio from the video clip and edited down to 4 minutes and sent it to Gwynn and Duncan of Vulcan records who turned it into a custom resin 4 minute cylinder. The main cost is in the production of the mould. Once the mould is made the cylinders are pretty reasonably priced and I had around 40 copies made. Many of these were given as Christmas presents to my family members along with an Edison Amberola 50 to play them on. I think I bought about half a dozen Amberola 50’s at Stanton’s fall auction that year (Steve Stanton was invaluable in helping me find the number of machines in good condition capable of playing a 4 minute cylinder that went for a reasonable piece - fortunately he had a lot of Amberola 50’s in good condition at his auction that year) to give as Christmas gifts along with the custom cylinder. While I have many rare and valuable records in my collection, the custom Vulcan cylinder of my beloved uncle telling one of his stories is hands down my favorite and most cherished record/ cylinder that I own. I cannot say enough nice things about my experience with Duncan and Gwynn an there expertise in helping me accomplish this project.

I can only second that, I visited Duncan recently, truly fascinating and brilliant, I love his cylinders too!

Thats an excellent story, and brilliant story, I'd love to do something like that
