How would I open/seperate talkophone spring barrel?

I'm rebuilding a talk-o-phone motor, and I can figure put how to open and separate these 2 spring barrels. Does anyone have any pointers? I can get the shaft to disconnect from one of the springs, but can't get the shaft to go through the barrel.

Never mind, I actually got it open. There is actually a lip on the barrel that needs to be leveraged from in order to take the lid off, allowing me to slide the shaft though one barell.
