O/T -- Clock mechanism wanted, buying advice needed

Post by JohnM »

We just bought a porcelain mantle clock circa 1910-1920. The original movement has been replaced by a more recent movement (ca. 1960), that fits the hole, but is all wrong as far as the style of the numbers and hands, and the brightness of the metal finish. The movement is in a round can, slides all the way through the porcelain case of the clock, and winds from the back. I have always thought of these as being called 'French movements' but that may not be the correct term. Years ago, my mother (who was an antiques dealer) had a porcelain clock with a 'can' movement with a gilt face that had snakes for numerals and for hands. Something like that would be ideal. I don't have the exact dimensions I need as I write this, but I'm only hoping someone on the board who is more familiar with clocks than I am can either help me out by familiarizing me with the correct nomenclature and background info on these movements so I can proceed to look for one myself using the right terminology, and/or point me in the right direction to find one. Thanks!
