request for input on segment repair of cylinder record

Post by A Ford 1 »

Hi all,I bought a wax Amberola cylinder at Wayne #683, Victor Herbert recording, even at half price it was $20. When I went to play it a trapeziform (a trapezoid with no parallel sides) piece came away from the record body. I am asking the group if anyone has tried to glue (super glue?) a cylinder back together. Both the reproducer and I would have to live with the aggravation the crack and a 5 or 6 grove missing segment would create.
Any input other than do not buy wax cylinders would be of interest.

The "cylinder doctor" might be able to help you. He's a dentist that comes to Union and fixes cylinders. He's not cheap. Search the board for "cylinder doctor" for more info.

Thank you Fran for the name. It's a long way to the next Wayne but I think I can last that long without playing it. I wonder if any of the V. Herbert recordings were made in Blue Amberol format? Does any one out there know of Blue Amberol Victor Herbert records?
Thank you all kindly for your current and future input,
Allen

Hi Allen,

There were Herbert Blue Amberols, four of them at least, I don't have my Sutton Blue Amberol book here to check for certain so someone may correct me. Some of the wax amberols were not "reissued" on BA and I've been collecting those as well, such a shame they're rather fragile.

Allen:
Your Amberol record was issued as #1775 on Blue Amberol. It was a popular cylinder and shouldn't be too hard to find.

I've attached a photo of the listing from Allan Sutton's excellent Blue Amberol Cylinders book.
Also attached is a photo of the list of Victor Herbert BAs.
Sorry about the sideways pics.

Hope this helps!

I have never seen Mike Kanchalian at the Wayne show, only at the Union show. I watched him perform his cylinder restoration art for hours, it is fascinating. If your cylinder is even somewhat common I don't think the amount of time (and money) his work would cost will be worth it, but that's just my opinion. I also don't know if black Amberol records would even survive the repair work - which involves heated staples and heated wax - or if they would simply explode from the differences in temperature?

If available a Blue Amberol might be your best option.

D'oh! I forgot about the 5000 series Herberts!

Thanks for posting that, Bob.

The Naughty Marietta Dream Amberol 683 was reissued as Blue Amberol 1775. I think all of the Victor Herbert Edison recordings were made before Blue Amberols and all of the Herbert 4 minute wax recordings were reissued in celluloid.
