SOLD: New Unsold Dealer Stock Edison DD #51933 - $80

Post by FellowCollector »

Almost 30 years ago I purchased a large group of (about one thousand) new, unsold Edison dealer stock Diamond Discs. All of them in the 50000, 51000 and 52000 series. This is one of them and it features 2 outstanding Fox Trots with Vocals (one by "Cookie" The California Sunshine Girl and one by Jack Davis). This is also one the more elusive Edison Diamond Discs to find.

This also has its original Edison Diamond Disc sleeve WITH the Edison Dealer stamp (BRAYDON AND CHAPMAN, EVERYTHING IN THE MUSIC LINE, GLENS FALLS, NEW YORK) AND the dealer catalog number stamp "51933" in the corner of the sleeve. The sleeve has a couple of tears with some old tape repair but the sleeve is otherwise very nice.

I played this record just once on a modern turntable with light weight tonearm and it is AMAZING. It has never been played on an Edison Diamond Disc Phonograph or any other phonograph.

#51933 "IF TEARS COULD BRING YOU BACK TO ME (I'D CRY MY EYES OUT FOR YOU)" Fox Trot by ERNIE GOLDEN AND HIS HOTEL McAlpin ORCHESTRA with Vocal by "Cookie" The California Sunshine Girl

-and-

"HOW'D YA LIKE TO MEET ME IN THE MOONLIGHT (AW COME ON LET'S GO)" Fox Trot by HARRY POLLOCK AND HIS ORCHESTRA with Vocal by Jack Davis

PM with interest. USPS Media Mail IS INCLUDED to USA addresses. International at cost. Thanks.

Does anyone know the story on that Glens Falls dealer's stock? Was there some massive discovery of their stash in somewhat-recent years, that was then dispersed out into collector land? Did Clarence Ferguson perhaps buy them out and hold on to their stock and sell it off bit by bit?

I have several new-old unplayed dealer stock DDs with their sleeves as well, which came to me with a lot of Ferguson stuff, which is why I'm curious.

I remember some years ago Uncle Vanya told me the story of an old store that still had unsold Edison stock up on the second, or was it the third floor. They only let collectors into this area and they wanted list price for the all the merchandise. For example, there was a Beethoven Edisonic for $225. But in the 70s, or was it the 80s, that was a lot of money for a console phonograph, so he didn't buy it. I forgot what other things they had. Maybe I should move this to the Machines section to get Vanya to tell the real story. Marc.

My own story will likely be rather prosaic to most on how I purchased the group that I own of new, unsold Edison Diamond Discs. Back around 1990 I placed a want ad in a newspaper for early phonographs and early records. A gentleman contacted me through the ad indicating that his father had been an avid record collector in the 1950's and 1960's. He (the man who contacted me) asked if I would be interested in buying some of his father's records. I told him I would love to and a couple of days later I was there. When I arrived he told me that his father purchased what was remaining at that time of Edison Diamond Disc stock from the Braydon & Chapman store back in the 1960's after the store closed. I looked at a few of the records and was stunned. I'd never seen any unsold dealer stock records. Most were dusty but there they were all in their original Edison sleeves. Multiple copies of some. I asked if he would consider selling the group consisting of the popular (50000) series. He thought about it for a long time and then set a price that I'm presuming he thought I would refuse. I thought I'd take a chance and so I bought them. He also had hundreds of 80000 series but I had (and still have) little interest in those so I passed on purchasing that series. I paid a buddy of mine who owned a heavy duty pick up truck to make the trip with me to bring them all home. We had to make a couple of trips on a weekend and we were both pretty tired of lifting those records around. But in the end it was a fun experience. I've stored them safe and dry in milk crates all these years. The Braydon & Chapman Music Store opened in 1911 so it's possible that Clarence Ferguson (and others) bought groups of records from the store when it was still open but well past the days when Edison records were popular with the public. There's a Dominos Pizza today in the bottom floor of the original building. I'm confident that the group that I purchased had been much larger at the time when his father purchased them in the 1960's since the son informed me that a number of the records were sold individually over the years. Anyway, that's about it. Not a very interesting story but I hope it helps a little. :)
